Optimization of test specimen dimensions for thermal power station exposure device

Abstract: Degradation of metallic materials can decrease mechanical properties of metal constructions and components in thermal power plants during their operation and consequently lead to loss of safety and reliability. It is difficult to remove material from the pressure system of the equipment being operated. Therefore, the effort is to design, produce and subsequently install exposure channels, which will allow to remove and evaluate samples of exposed material without intervention into the pressure system. The expo… Show more

“…The usability of the MTT technique to assess the mechanical properties of various structure states was previously demonstrated for conventionally and additively processed materials by Chvostova et al [40], Gotterbarm et al, and Džugan et al [43]. The application of MTT specimens was also presented by Melzer et al In this study, the sub-sized specimens were employed in order to investigate local mechanical properties of the interface of two different materials in a functionally graded block providing a deep insight into the location-and orientation-related properties [44]. The MTT was performed following the internal methodology RD 2/30 (accredited) according to the standard DIN EN ISO 6892-1/ASTM E8 [42].…”

“…The tensile properties were investigated by miniaturized tensile test (MTT) [ 36 , 37 ]. The testing specimens were extracted from the additively manufactured part by a wire electric discharge machine (WEDM), in accordance with the geometrical dimensions depicted in Figure 9 a.…”

“…Specimens outline and cutting scheme within the extracted piece of material can be seen in Figure 5 a). For 10Cr-3W-3Co-1Mo material, test specimens with a diameter of two millimeters [5] were used. Both dimensions are based on the shape of the sample with dimensions of 20x20x4 mm, that can be extracted from real in service components by semi-destructive device EDSE (the Electric Discharge Sampling Equipment).…”
