Optimization of the Friedel–Crafts Alkylation for the Synthesis of Hyper-Cross-Linked Polymers

Abstract: An optimized Friedel -Crafts based methodology to prepare high surface area and pore volume hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) is here presented. A significant reduction in catalyst quantities resulted in an HCP showing SSABET of 905 m 2 /g and total pore volume of ≈ 1.12 cc/g. Spectroscopic investigations (DR-FTIR and SS-NMR) reveal that lowering the amount of catalyst avoid uncontrolled reaction pathways. For the optimized material CO2 uptakes are 2.55 mmol/g at 273 K and 1 bar. High pressure measurements at 2… Show more

“…This suggests that the framework of the material, upon interacting with the nitrogen guest molecules during the adsorption phase, undergoes structural rearrangements causing the entrapment of a fraction of the adsorbate, in the time scale of the experiment. 32 Similar structural changes are commonly found for flexible porous frameworks such as polymers, 33,34 usually suggesting that the material possess swelling properties. The specific surface area obtained by applying the BET method is found to be 261 m 2 /g.…”

“…Given the spectra similarities exhibited by DTX materials with those of similar HCPs, the structure reported in the inset of Figure is proposed. Additional information regarding the NMR characterization ( 1 H ECHO NMR spectra) is reported in Figure S4.…”

“…[16][17][18][19][20] The conventional approach for synthesizing HCPs involves Friedel-Crafts alkylation, albeit with the associated drawbacks of environmentally unfriendly generation of harmful byproducts and use of volatile solvents. 21,22 As a result, an alternative approach for HCP synthesis based on free radical polymer-ization using bismaleimide (BMI) derivatives has been investigated with green and atom-economical procedures. [23][24][25] Bismaleimide can effectively decrease the generation of harmful chemicals due to its additive reactions.…”
