Optimization of tribological parameters to enhance wear and friction properties of Ti6Al4V alloy using Taguchi method

Abstract: The present study is an endeavor to investigate the wear and friction behavior of Ti6Al4V against alumina (Al2O3) using a pin-on-disc tribometer at room temperature. The tests were performed for a given range of loads (10–90 N) and sliding velocities (0.5–4 m/s) for a sliding distance of 3000 m. The wear rate increased continuously with load and showed transition behavior with respect to the sliding velocity. Minimum friction was observed at the intermediate sliding velocities. Using the Taguchi tool, it was f… Show more

“…51 These alloys are used to make components for aircraft and spacecraft, compressor blades, discs, and rings, pressure vessels, rocket engine casings, helicopter rotor hubs, and connectors. 58 Ti6Al4V titanium alloy bar samples supplied from the USA were used for experimentation. The chemical composition of this alloy consists of Al 6.25%, V 4.1%, Fe 0.4%, O 0.2%, N 0.03%, H 0.015%, C 0.2% and the balance is Ti element.…”

“…Generally, the matrix is made up of lighter metal such as magnesium, aluminum and titanium etc. The main aim of manufacturing these types of composites is to increase the properties of the material by the addition of reinforcement particles [22][23][24][25][26][27]. The metal matrix composite has very advantages over polymer matrix composite.…”

“…SEM images are displayed at various magnifications. During FSP, the material is simultaneously infused with heat created by friction and intense plastic deformation [26][27][28][29][30][31]. These events aid in the dispersion of reinforcement particles in the stirred zone, converting the FSPed zone to a composite.…”
