Optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction of procyanidins from perilla seed hull and their antioxidant activities in vitro

Abstract: Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was used to extract procyanidins (PC) from the perilla seed hull. Four independent variables, namely, liquid-to-solid ratio, ethanol concentration, UAE time, and UAE temperature were investigated. Response surface methodology was performed on the basis of results of single-factor tests. The optimal conditions for PC extraction were as follows: a liquid-to-solid ratio of 15:1, an ethanol concentration of 62%, a UAE time of 29 min, and a UAE temperature of 53 °C. Under these … Show more

“…A study has determined that higher procyanidin consumption is related to a lower cancer risk. Based on their health advantages, procyanidins are potentially beneficial as dietary antioxidants and nutraceuticals [ 3 ]. Typically, procyanidins are derived from several natural sources, including apples, cinnamon, grape peels, grape seeds, legumes, and maritime pine bark [ 5 ].…”

“…The UAE method shortens the extraction time and energy requirements as compared to conventional extraction methods. Also, the UAE method provides the recovery of bioactive compounds through the action of acoustic cavitation generated by an ultrasound wave in the solvent, and the enhancement of mass transport by disrupting the plant cell walls (Dranca & Oroian, 2016;Li et al, 2019;Riciputi et al, 2018;Rodrigues et al, 2015). On the other hand, the UAE efficiency is affected by several parameters such as ultrasound amplitude, extraction time, temperature, solvent-sample ratio, and pH (Chemat et al, 2017).…”

“…Perilla seed meal (PSM), a by-product of PSO extraction process, is discarded as a waste product or used as a protein source in animal feed as a low-cost material [14][15][16]. The PSM should be analyzed and reused because it is rich in numerous bioactive components such as phenolic compounds and others [17][18][19][20]. Because their molecular mechanisms remain unknown, it is worth studying these active pharmaceutical ingredients in PSO and PSM.…”
