Optimization of UV-Electroproxone procedure for treatment of landfill leachate: the study of energy consumption

Abstract: With increased population, treatment of solid waste landfill and its leachate is of major concern. Municipal landfill leachate shows variable, heterogeneous and incontrollable characteristics and contains wide range highly concentrated organic and inorganic compounds, in which hampers the application of a solo method in its treatment. Among different approaches, biological treatment can be used, however it is not effective enough to elimination all refractory organics, containing fulvic-like and humic-like sub… Show more

“…The use of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for BTEX removal is a promising approach based on radical generation 10 . One of subsets of AOPs, including the ozonation process (OP) and its derivatives 11 . The ozonation process for BTEX elimination at ambient temperature is favorable as compared to other techniques given energy saving 12 .…”

“…Based on a previous report [13], pH, experimental time, the amount of Fe 2+ , and the H 2 O 2 :Fe 2+ ratio are significant to the outcome of oxidative leachate treatment. Optimization of the aforementioned parameters could be a solution to overcoming the weaknesses in the Fenton process.…”

“…Advanced oxidation process (AOP) records good performance in remediating landfill leachate, such as the Fenton method, UV-electroproxone (Kermani et al, 2021), catalytic ozonation with granular faujasite zeolite (AlGburi et al, 2021), combination of hydrogen peroxide with US system (US-H 2 O 2 ) and hybrid of persulfate with US system (US-PS) (Tripathy et al, 2019). Unlike adsorption, which is a phase-transfer process, AOP is regarded as a destructive process.…”
