Optimization of Welding Parameters of AISI 431 and AISI 1020 Joints Joined by Friction Welding Using Taguchi Method

Abstract: Martensitic stainless steel AISI 431 and low carbon steel AISI 1020 are materials used together in many different industries. However, important problems are encountered when welding (fusion welding) these materials to each other. For this reason, friction welding process (Solid-state welding) is used to join these dissimilar metals. There are very few studies on joining these materials with friction welding. Therefore, the optimization of the welding parameters used in joining these dissimilar steel pairs wit… Show more

“…The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and percent elongation were derived from the stress-strain curve indicating strength and ductility, respectively. 20,21,40,41 The tensile test was conducted on NiTinol BM, samples P, Q, R, and S. Supplementary Figure 19 shows the variation of tensile strength (UTS value) and elongation percentage for all the HI trails. NiTinol BM showed UTS and percent elongation of 700 MPa and 11.6%, respectively.…”

“…3234 Few researchers have explored FSW, µPAM, EBW, CDW, resistance welding, ultrasonic spot welding, GMAW, friction welding, and TIG welding of NiTinol SMA. 3541 Similar to LBW, DPTIG is also capable of supplying lesser HI on thin sheets. 42 In this work, NiTinol is joined using minimal HI.…”

“…In this ex-perimental design method, it is possible to optimize multiple parameters as the most robust and powerful. With this method, the optimal levels of control factors are determined, their effects on the response are analysed and the relationship between controllable and uncontrollable parameters is revealed [27][28][29][30][31][32]. In this statistical method, the input factors investigated are taken into account and the effects of these factors on the response functions are revealed through Signal to noise (S/N) ratios.…”
