Optimization on the cold drawing process of 6063 aluminium tubes

Abstract: a b s t r a c tTo obtain the T832 material behaviour, 6063-T4 tubes need to be cold drawn before artificial aging to enhance their mechanical properties. Since a high area reduction is required, multiple drawing passes are generally necessary to avoid fracture of tubes during the drawing process. These several steps need a time consuming process which could be reduced by optimization. The optimization of the tools geometry has been done through a finite element model with the objective of reducing the maximum … Show more

“…The experimental results only permit to determine macroscopic data, but failure criteria calculation needs the local strain and stress fields to be evaluated. These fields can be evaluated by means of FEM (Palengat et al, 2013;Beland et al, 2011).…”

“…To avoid fracture occurring at the die exit, the drawing stress applied to the drawn section at the die exit must remain within a safety margin below the ultimate tensile stress of the drawn material. The axial stress in the drawn tube is therefore the main limitation for drawing as shown by Béland et al (2011). Bui et al (2011) determined the drawing limit of AA6063 tube using a 5°halfangle conical mandrel.…”

“…The study showed that both the length and shape of bearing channel depend on the drawing force with conventional tooling [2]. In another study, Beland et al [3] used LS-DYNA to determine optimization of tool geometry for reducing stress level for 6063 T4 by a sinker die, a drawing die, and cylindrical plug. The study reveals that three tubes can be drawn at the same time up to maximum length of 12 m at different tube diameters and wall thicknesses.…”
