Optimized motion simplification for crowd animation

Abstract: Simulating a huge number of articulate figures in a real-time application is one of the challenging research topics in character animation. Several researchers have tried to improve the performance of animation using the image-based technique such as 'impostor.' This method improved the speed of the animation; however, the accuracy, memory, and interactivity problems related to motion remain to be resolved. In this regard, a 'motion simplification' framework for an articulate figure is proposed, which not only… Show more

“…We also noticed that characters following real trajectories looks more realistic with various speed and movement along a path. In case of 1,000 characters simulation, about twice of computation is needed than motion simplification method [1]. However, the collision avoidance was not considered.…”

“…Kulpa et al [12] proposed an LOD method for collision detection and avoidance. In [1], an animation LOD system that adjusts the number of moving bones according to the selected detail level is presented. In fact, LOD in navigation is used in the areas where neither the user focus nor the interaction is available therefore; navigation is unnecessary for those areas.…”

“…To increase the agent count, level of detail (LOD) techniques are used in both rendering [8,14] and behavior [1,12] of the simulation. Kulpa et al [12] proposed an LOD method for collision detection and avoidance.…”

“…At present, the mass animation production method has been widely used in many commercial movies, and commercial software specially used for mass animation production has been produced, such as the famous large-scale mass animation software, which created amazing animations in the movie " e Lord of the Rings," and visual e ects and won the 2003 Academy Award for Science and Engineering. In addition to lm and television e ects, crowd animation is widely used in the eld of game entertainment and simulation research, so crowd animation has profound research signi cance [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].…”
