Aim To identify nurse managers' essential information needs in daily unit operation in perioperative settings. Design Qualitative and quantitative descriptive design. Methods The study consisted of (I) generation of an item pool of potential information needs, (II) assessment of the item pool by an expert panel and (III) confirming the essential information needs of nurse managers in daily unit operation with a survey (N = 288). Content validity index values were calculated for the assessments by expert panel and in the survey. Internal consistency of the final item pool was explored with Cronbach's alpha. The data were collected from 2011–2015. Results During the study process, the number of essential information needs decreased from 92–41. The final item pool consisted of 12 subthemes, and they were categorized into four main themes: patient's care process, surgical procedure, human resources and tangible resources. The findings can be used to create a knowledge map for information system purposes.

Concept maps are two-dimensional visual tools providing the definition of the relationships between the concepts in a certain subject area. Although various studies indicate that the graphical display of information has a positive contribution to the process of learning, the creation of concept maps in contents especially with a high text density brings some difficulties with it. It is observed that since studies are conducted on the automatic creation of concept maps for the purpose of overcoming these difficulties, but the algorithms used in these kinds of studies are generally developed according to the language structure, the products introduced do not adjust to the language structure of Turkish. From this viewpoint, a web-based application was developed for the creation of concept maps for Turkish texts by using the term frequency and inverse document frequency algorithms and the application developed was published at www.kavramharitasiolustur.com. The concept maps created by the application can be downloaded in a format that can be used directly in web-based learning environments.

Aircraft is a typical transportation facility and its development need to refer to the existing knowledge. With the rapid increase of knowledge, a knowledge map may deliver excess knowledge to users that they cannot manage at once, thereby causing the problem of knowledge overload. Hence, a novel method for adaptive knowledge map construction was proposed to solve this problem. First, the knowledge was semantically annotated and stored with the domain ontology and a knowledge model that integrates context. Then, user requirement was described by the context of product design, and knowledge nodes that met users' requirement could be extracted from the knowledge retrieval technology on the basis of context similarity. Finally, the connection between knowledge nodes was constructed with a composite connection model, and the knowledge map was visualized using a hierarchical approach. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the constructed knowledge map was applied in an airplane wing design to assist users in browsing the knowledge base. Results indicate that the proposed method can change the displayed contents according to user requirement and identify the displayed knowledge nodes at a highly acceptable level, the constructed knowledge map can guide users efficiently, and the knowledge overload can be reduced significantly.
