Optimizing mix proportion of recycled aggregate concrete by readjusting the aggregate gradation

Abstract: It is necessary to ensure the properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) can meet the requirements of those for the corresponding natural aggregate concrete (NAC), since only in such cases recycled aggregates (RA) may be accepted for structural use. This study aims to propose a modified design method of RAC based on aggregate gradation readjustment (AGR). It tries to maintain the effective amounts of both the coarse and fine aggregates of RAC similar to that of the NAC after concrete mixing as it is well … Show more

“…It was reported that the fresh properties were influenced by the water/cement ratio, quantity of RA and the paste volume. Duan et al 40 evaluated the effect of aggregate grading on the properties of RAC. The aggregate grading was adjusted to obtain RAC with mechanical properties similar to those of NAC.…”

“…Furthermore, the proportions of RA/NA can be wisely selected to obtain the desired properties of RAC. 42 The use of RA will lead to technical, economic and environmental benefits, including conservation of natural sources of aggregates. Also, the use of RAC will lead to a sustainable development of the construction industry.…”

“…Aggregates (RCA) Recycled aggregates are different from natural aggregates due to the presence of cement gangue of old mortar, which remains attached to the natural aggregates after crushing of the original concrete and induces lower densities and greater capacity of water absorption [21]. A polished cylindrical specimen prepared only using coarse RCA and white cement is shown in Figure 2.…”

“…The indexes of highperformance concrete are often better than those of ordinary concrete. [36][37][38][39][40][41] Therefore, if the high-performance concrete is used to column, earthquake damage to the column will be greatly reduced. Taking the workshop column and the plaster layer as an example, the detail categories and the corresponding detail seismic damage descriptions are shown in Table 1.…”
