Optimizing product design using quantitative quality function deployment: a case study

Abstract: In this paper, we examine the applicability of quality function deployment (QFD) in optimizing product design. QFD is a systematic process that can help businesses to focus on their customers. In recent years, many quantitative QFD methods have been developed. However, only a small number of case studies have been reported on their use. For this research a case study on personal computer design was conducted. It demonstrates that quantitative QFD can be successfully implemented in product design. Some limitati… Show more

“…It is a method that collects vaguely expressed quality requirements from the market and uses them to actual product design works [18]. Example use of QFD in product design and development process can be seen in many research works like for standing aircraft passenger seat [19], school furniture [20] and also for personal computer [21]. In this study, QFD method is applied for the development of improved in-flight food delivery and waste collection system for application onboard commercial transport aircraft.…”

“…There are numerous publications on QFD in the literature (Kim, 1997, Mrad, 1997, Persson et al, 2000, Gerling et al, 2002, Han et al, 2004, Yoram and Eyal, 2005, Chan and Wu, 2005, Bhattacharya et al, 2005, Dweiri and Kablan, 2005, Poel, 2007, Lai et al, 2007. Various applications within the literature can be grouped into three categories: QFD implementations before the design stage, QFD implementations during the design stage, and QFD implementations after the design stage (Dikmen et al, 2005).…”

“…Mathematical programming is one of these optimization methods. The linear programming model is used to maximize the overall customer satisfaction (e.g., Chen and Ko 2009;Lai et al 2007). Park and Kim (1998) used integer programming to optimize product design in the QFD.…”
