Optimizing Sampling and Extraction Methods for Plant-Parasitic and Entomopathogenic Nematodes

Abstract: Plant-parasitic and entomopathogenic nematodes (PPNs and EPNs) are key groups in crop production systems. This study aims at optimizing nematode sampling and extraction methods to benefit integrated pest management (IPM) through (a) management of PPNs and (b) use of EPNs. The impacts of these methods on PPNs and EPNs to achieve cost-effective and efficient IPM programs are presented. The common misuses of sampling and extraction methods are discussed. Professionals engaged in IPM should consider sampling the r… Show more

“…Globally, the prevalence of EPNs in soil samples was reported to range from 0.7 to 50% ( Benseddiq et al, 2020 ; Hominick, 2002 ) though specific sampling methods with repeated extraction technique may exceed this range ( Abd-Elgawad, 2020 ). Merits and demerits of nematode-sampling and extraction methods were recently reviewed ( Abd-Elgawad, 2021 ).…”

“…Due to the above-mentioned huge numbers and many species of pests and pathogens of Egyptian citrus, the following part will focus on an important group of these pests, the plant-parasitic nematodes. Factually, PPNs and entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are two important sets as harmful and beneficial organisms, respectively in crop production systems (Abd-Elgawad, 2021b). In this respect, the proportion of nematode injury to any plant species is also related to PPN species/race, densities, and existing conditions, abiotic and biotic factors.…”

“…Although optimizing PPN sampling and extraction methods to avoid their misuse and achieve cost-effective and efficient IPM programs are recently emphasized [ 100 ], such advances for PPN control should biotechnologically keep up in parallel to these improvements. The current research on genome sequencing technologies, small interfering RNA techniques (RNAi), and targeted genome editing should be harnessed to better grasp plant–nematode interaction mechanisms, and molecular enhancing of PPN-plant resistance should be used to boost these programs [ 1 ].…”
