Optimizing Team Dynamics: An Assessment of Physician Trainees and Advanced Practice Providers Collaborative Practice*

Abstract: Several articles were identified describing the utilization of advanced practice providers in the ICU and the impact of models of care on patient outcomes. Limited data exist describing the impact of advanced practice providers on resident and fellow education and training experience. In addition, there are minimal data describing methods to enhance collaboration between providers. Future research should focus on determining the optimal ICU team structure to improve patient outcomes, education of trainees, and… Show more

“…The relevance of physical therapy team composition on patient outcomes when treating neck pain in the outpatient setting is evident due to high economic burden of neck pain as well as similar questions of personnel utilization in other fields of medicine [1][2][3][4][5][6]8,9,12,13]. While the literature has examined this question about the value and utilization of PTAs in the acute and subacute care settings, this study is the first article to date on the impact of PTA utilization on patient outcomes for musculoskeletal conditions in the outpatient physical therapy clinic [7][8][9][10].…”

“…Treatment team composition is a topic of increasing interest in the medical field, as numerous studies have examined the impact of advanced practice providers (APPs) working with physicians on overall patient outcomes and healthcare cost [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Similar questions have been asked in the field of physical therapy as to the value and impact of physical therapy assistants (PTAs) on patient outcomes, mostly in the setting of skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and acute care [7][8][9][10].…”

“…3,4 Utilization of advanced practice providers in critical care has been shown to contribute to improvement in patient safety and outcomes, patient and family satisfaction, staff knowledge, team collaboration, physician work-life balance, and organisational policy setting. [5][6][7][8] The term advanced practice provider refers to either a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Advanced practice providers are filling an increasing gap in critical care provider coverage due to decreasing specialty physicians, physician work hour restrictions, increased acuity, and volume of patients.…”

“…19 The addition of APPs to critical care provider teams has been found to contribute to improvement in patient safety and outcomes, staff knowledge, team collaboration, physician work-life balance, and patient and family satisfaction. [20][21][22][23] Over time, the roles and responsibilities of these nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants working in ICUs have expanded. Twenty-six percent of all pediatric acute care certified NPs practice in critical care units, leading to increased opportunities for APPs to function as team leaders during resuscitation events.…”
