Optimizing the effect of reinforcement, particle size and aging on impact strength for Al 6061-red mud composite using Taguchi technique

Abstract: Aluminium 6061-red mud composite has been successfully casted by using stir casting. Fairly uniform distribution of red mud reinforcement has been observed by SEM micrographs. The presence of red mud particles inside the matrix has been confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy. Impact testing has been done on impact testing machine with a range of 1-300 J (Charpy), 1-175 (Izod) and least count of 0.5 J. Impact strength shows a decreasing trend with increase in percentage reinforcement, aging time and is inc… Show more

“…The analysis of variance (ANOVA) results from Table 4 also revealed that these two parameters ( current and T-On ) and their interaction are significantly affecting the volume of a channel with p -values less than 0.05. 27 From the factorial plots, the volume of the channel was found to be higher at moderate value of discharge idle time, T-off (level 2: 36 µs). It is because if the idle time is too short the molten material could not be flushed away by the dielectric and gets re-solidified at the inter-electrode gap.…”

“…Results were measured as the weight loss after the wear. Samples of the size of 10 cm diameter and 30 cm height were prepared based on ASTM G99-05 standard at CITCO, Chandigarh [22]. The cross-sectional surface of the samples was mechanically rubbed using emery papers and velvet cloth.…”

“…In order to reduce pollution, numerous scholars have conducted a lot of research in the resource utilization of industrial waste and achieved some results. For example, red mud is currently used in magnesium phosphate cement [8,9], ultra-high-performance concrete [10,11], and envi-ronmental remediation agents [12,13] after treatment. However, many studies have shown that the particle size and admixture of industrial waste sludge can have a significant effect on the performance of cement mortar [14][15][16].…”
