Optimum design of the entrance of a fishpond laterally to the main stream of an open channel

Abstract: In this study, the optimum design of the entrance of a fishpond laterally to the main flow of an open channel was investigated numerically and experimentally. The flow characteristic measurements were realized with the PIV (particle image velocimetry) method. The mathematical simulations were based on the development of a two dimensional -mean in depthhydrodynamic model and a quasi three dimensional sediment transport model which includes processes of advection, diffusion, and settling of conservative suspende… Show more

“…In order to avoid eutrophic problems in the harbors' basin the parameter BOD can then be calculated since it is one of the most important environmental indicators. Subsequently the mean Y. Savvidis, S. Mamtsadeli concentration C, of BOD in the harbors' basin is given by the following relationship (Koutitas et al, 1996;Savvidis et al, 2017):…”

“…The development and application of such models help the scientists and engineers to find alternative solutions in order to avoid or reduce unpleasant and negative environmental effects. For example, sediment transport which causes a dynamic change of the coastline, coastal erosion or deposition (Monioudi et al, 2017;Karambas, 2014) stagnant waters in a harbor (Winterwerp, 2005) or the environmental state and the seawater quality of a harbor (Savvidis et al, 2017;Savvidis & Keramaris, 2021) are some of the most characteristic cases which are well studied through the use of mathematical models and more specifically hydrodynamic models, sediment transport models, water quality or ecological models.…”

“…The Particle Image Velocimetry (P.I.V.) technique was used successfully from the researchers of this study in their previous researches [10][11][12]. The PIV system which was used for the measurement of the velocity distribution in the flow domain, was a two-dimensional one consisting of a twin pulsed Nd: Yag lasers (532 nm wavelength, 300 mJ/pulse at 10 Hz), a cross correlation 8 bit 1 K × 1 K CCD camera (Kodak, MEGAPLUS ES 1.0), a synchronizer, a computer, an image acquisition system and a PIV analysis software (Insight 3G).…”

“…This technique was recently used successfully by [13] who studied experimentally the effects of surrounding outer porous cylinder on vortex structure downstream of a circular inner cylinder in deep water flow. Furthermore, PIV experiments were conducted by [14] and also included in the recent research by [15]. The specific experimental procedure, adjusted in our laboratory, is described as follows: The system has two lasers which give light pulses in a controlled time (synchronizer) while the time step between two successive pulses for the velocities that we study was determined to 1.5 msec.…”
