Optimum imaging for mucoceles

Abstract: A mucocele is an epithelial lined mucus-containing sac completely filling a paranasal sinus and capable of expansion. They are relatively unusual, occurring most frequently in the fronto-ethmoidal region. The imaging features on plain X-ray, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are relatively characteristic allowing distinction of the lesion from other pathologies in this area although the mucoceles may occur in association with other pathologies such as nasal polyposis and neoplasia.

“…The maxillary antrum is a relatively unfrequent site for mucocele formation, accounting for 10 percent or less of mucoceles. 7,8 In our study, mucoceles were seen frequently in frontoethmoidal sinus followed by ethmoidal location then frontal sinus.…”

“…Mococeles have the typical radiographic appearance of a fully opacified sinus with evidence of rounded or ovoid expansion and bone erosion. The bony outline becomes more rounded as the bone remodels in response to growing pressure within the sinus cavity [20]. Radiologically all malignant lesions are characterized by soft tissue mass with aggressive bone destruction of the adjacent walls.…”

“…Four cases presented with mucoceles, three frontoethmoid and one maxillary. Mucoceles are frequently seen in the frontoethmoid region [20] but also are seen the maxillary sinus. Maxillary mucoceles are rare with an incidence of 3-10% …”

“…The majority are homogenous, isodense with the brain [2] and typically show a rounded bony outline [4]. Most mucocoeles do not show contrast enhancement and in fact the administration of contrast medium is rarely necessary.…”

“…Most mucocoeles do not show contrast enhancement and in fact the administration of contrast medium is rarely necessary. Bony detail is an added advantage of CT [4]. An opaque maxillary sinus without bone erosion invites the diagnosis of sinusitis, retention cysts and antrochoanal polyps.…”
