Optimum Performance of Externally Pressurized Porous Thrust Bearings

Abstract: The use of porous materials in externally pressurized thrust bearings i s attractive. Compared with conventional externally pressurized bearings, there is a more even distribution of pressure at the thrust face and a n external restrictor is not required, which leads to a compad design.A theoretical analysis of a n externally pressurized, circular, porous thrust pad i s presented and the effects of pad geometry and permeability anisotropy on the load and flow characteristics are demonstrated. The pumping power… Show more

“…Since then significant contributions in this field have done by many researchers. 57 However, the use of external pressurization in porous oil bearings started with Howarth 8 who carried out theoretical and experimental investigation on circular thrust bearing and pointed out that more even pressure distribution can be obtained by the use of porous bearings. Analytical solution of hydrostatic porous oil journal bearings was presented by Majumdar and Rao.…”

“…Although Cusano [3,4] gave an analytical solution considering radial¯ow for the performance characteristics of a hydrodynamic twolayered porous bearing using short-and long-bearing approximations respectively, no literature is available on externally pressurized two-layered porous bearings, but investigations have been reported on externally pressurized conventional porous bearings using oil as lubricant. Howarth [5,6] carried out analytical and experimental work on the performance of externally pressurized porous thrust bearings. Majumdar and Rao [7] gave an approximate analytical solution of hydrostatic porous oil journal bearings considering radial¯ow.…”
