Presupposition triggers, such as the additive particle too, the iterative particle again, and the definite determiner the, are obligatory if their presuppositions are satisfied in the context. This observation is accounted for in the literature by two theories: one based on Maximize Presupposition (e.g., Heim 1991; Percus 2006; Chemla 2008), the other based on Obligatory Implicatures (Bade 2016). In this paper, we report on two experiments in two typologically unrelated languages, Ga (Kwa) and German, which were designed to test the predictions of these two approaches for the insertion of additive particles. The results show that in both languages the insertion of additives is regulated by Obligatory Implicatures, posing challenges for Maximize Presupposition. Following Bade (2016), we assume a division of labor between the two theories in explaining obligatory presupposition effects. NADINE BADE

Additive fragments, comprising a nominal remnant and an additive adverb (e.g., too, either), are a particular type of stripping. On the basis of new corpus data in English and French, we show that such fragments do not always have a verbal clause as their antecedent, and that when they do, different kinds of mismatch are possible between a verbal equivalent and the actual fragment. This challenges most approaches based on syntactic reconstruction. We also show that their interpretation is more flexible than previously thought, since they can be used for interrogative, exclamatory, or ordering purposes. We distinguish between their contrastive (non-coreferent) use (A: John left. B: Me too.) and emphatic (coreferent) use (A: John left. B: HIM too!). We propose a direct interpretation analysis that resorts to no syntactic reconstruction of a verbal clause. The proposed analysis, developed within the framework of construction-based HPSG, allows us to capture not only their properties sharing with other fragments (short answers and negative stripping) but also their unique constructional properties.

RESUMO Neste artigo, propomos uma análise semântica e pragmática do uso do item ‘também’ do português brasileiro como partícula aditiva. Para tanto, num primeiro momento, identificamos alguns dos diferentes usos de ‘também’, e, então, isolamos seu uso como partícula aditiva. Fazemos, na sequência, uma comparação de ‘também’ com o item ‘too’, do inglês, que apresenta comportamento semelhante com relação a esse tipo de uso. Feito isso, apresentamos as intuições e análises encontradas em alguns trabalhos anteriores e analisamos em mais detalhe as vantagens e desvantagens da teoria proposta por Amsili e Beyssade (2010, 2013) sobre a partícula aditiva ‘too’ do inglês e ‘aussi’ do francês, quando aplicado ao item ‘também’ do português brasileiro. Propomos, então, em contraposição a Amsili e Beyssade (2010, 2013), uma análise de ‘também’ como partícula aditiva cuja função é criar listas, com base no trabalho de Zhang (2015), e que dá conta dos problemas que detectamos na análise de Amsili e Beyssade (2010, 2013).
