OPTN/SRTR 2015 Annual Data Report: Kidney

Abstract: The first full year of data after implementation of the new kidney allocation system reveals an increase in deceased donor kidney transplants among black candidates and those with calculated panel-reactive antibodies 98%-100%, but a decrease among candidates aged 65 years or older. Data from 2015 also demonstrate ongoing positive trends in graft and patient survival for both deceased and living donor kidney transplants, but the challenges of a limited supply of kidneys in the setting of increasing demand remai… Show more

“…Furthermore, patient survival of renal transplant recipients (RTR) is significantly lower compared to the general population 4. In spite of previous developments, in the past 2 decades, there was only little improvement in long‐term graft and patient survival after renal transplantation 5. Approximately 50% of all renal allografts from deceased donors are lost in a period of 10‐12 years after transplantation 6.…”

“…According to the OPTN/ SRTR 2015 Annual Data Report, 5626 living donor transplants were performed, slightly up from 5539 in 2014 but well below the peak of 6647 in 2004. This decline appears to be due to a decrease in related kidney donations ( Figure 1) [9]. Based on these facts, we need many efforts to enhance living donation.…”

“…Data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) reported a10-year overall graft survival of55 to 60% for both living and deceased donors [9]. Despite the significant improvements in one year graft survival, the rate of chronic graft loss after the first year remains substantial [48].…”

“…Tacrolimus is the cornerstone immunosuppressant for kidney transplant patients, with more than 90% of newly transplanted patients receiving the drug following transplantation 1. Tacrolimus is effective in preventing graft rejection2; however, it has a narrow therapeutic range and requires close monitoring to ensure that both supra‐ and subtherapeutic concentrations are avoided 1, 2.…”

“…Tacrolimus is effective in preventing graft rejection2; however, it has a narrow therapeutic range and requires close monitoring to ensure that both supra‐ and subtherapeutic concentrations are avoided 1, 2. Trough concentrations below the therapeutic range are associated with increased risk of rejection,3, 4, 5 whereas blood concentrations above the therapeutic range increase the risk of toxicity 6, 7, 8…”
