“…Beattie ( 1979 ) found that hesitant speech which requires more planning (i.e., cognitively challenging) was associated with averted gaze. Park ( 2015 ) found that in interactions with teachers, students were more likely to use an “or-prefaced” self-repair sequence (i.e., immediately starts another turn with an “or” to give an alternative example), when teachers used dispreference signals, such as hesitation and pauses, which was often accompanied by a teacher's eye gaze shift from a mutual eye gaze.
