Oral administration of a chymotrypsin-labile peptide--a new test of exocrine pancreatic function in man (PFT).

Abstract: SUMMARY One gram N-benzoyl-L-tyrosyl PABA was orally administered to 24 controls, 15 patients with chronic exocrine pancreatic disease, 13 patients after an attack of acute pancreatitis, two patients with gluten-sensitive enteropathy, and 10 patients with biliary tract disease, peptic ulcer, or other pathology of the gastrointestinal tract. In the presence of chymotrypsin, PABA is split from the peptide and excreted in the urine. The amount of PABA excreted serves as a parameter of exocrine pancreatic function… Show more

“…The leukocyte count never changed significantly during the course of the investigation. These data confirm the previous observations of our and Bornschein's group (7,8) revealing no toxicity of N-benzoyl-L-tyrosyl-p-aminobenzoicacid.…”

“…The results were later confirmed in monkeys with metabolic-pancreatic function test has also been applied to humans ally induced pancreatic insufficiency (2). The test is since that time (3), and on the basis of available reports based on the chymotrypsin-specific cleavage of the it seems capable of fulfilling the expectations suggested orally administered peptide, N-benzoyl-i-tyrosyl-pby a screening procedure (4)(5)(6)(7)(8). The test is generally aminobenzoic acid.…”

“…Pancreatic juice was collected at a constant rate for 60 min from the initiation of an infusion of secretin, and analysed for volume, mean bicarbonate concentration and amylase output (Tatebe et al 1976). Pancreatic function diagnostant (PFD) test was carried out using N-benzol-l-tyrosyl-p-aminobenzoic acid (BT-PABA, 0.5 g) and expressed as percent urinary extraction of PABA (Gyr 1976;Miyakawa et al 1980). Normal range is 75 to 100%.…”
