Oral Cancer Report from Northeastern Hungary

Abstract: In Hungary oral and pharyngeal cancers have been reported the fourth most common malignancy in males and the sixth for both sexes. The aim of the present study was to characterize oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients in Northeastern Hungary. 119 randomly selected patients with OSCC were included in the study. Epidemiological data, clinicopathological parameters and the risk factors were registered. The most common sites of OSCC were the floor of the mouth (27.7%), the lip (26.9%) and the tongue (22.7%)… Show more

“…Irritation fibroma occurred in 14.4% of our samples which is similar to the 14.6% presented by Barker and Lucas, 33 but less than that found by Toida et al 24 Considering that irritation fibroma can be affected by oral habits, 34 which in turn are known to be related to social stress and cultural factors, this element may have a role in the differences observed between populations. Squamous cell carcinoma showed a prevalence of 13.8% in the current investigation which falls at the lower end of the 10.7 to 53% 27,[35][36][37] reported in other studies. There is a long list of items affecting the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma ranging from the use of tobacco to phenolic agents and a number of systemic diseases 19 which can be responsible for these variations.…”

“…In this study, tobacco exposure was observed in 90% of the patients with OSCC, ranging from 77.8 to 100% intergroup. The profile of our patient regarding tobacco consumption was similar to those detected in some previous studies even in developed countries (9,35,36), but other authors reported a different prevalence (50-65.5%) of smoking patients (1,34,37). The percent of smokers in OL NM was similar to the control group of a study with young adults performed by Rodriguez et al (38).…”

“…This is concordant with the findings in other studies in different geographical areas [12,13,[20][21][22]. However, some studies, especially from the western world, showed a higher percentage of early diseases [10,23,24]. The burden of oral cancer is considered heavier in some developing countries, due to difficulties in primary prevention and application of regulatory policies, to access screening by a dental or medical professional and to have access to treatment when the disease has already progressed [25].…”
