Oral Chinese Herbal Medicine for Treatment of Dilated Cardiomyopathy: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

Abstract: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the main causes of heart failure and could increase death, hospitalization, and rehospitalization rate. The effect of conventional medicine treatment (CMT) is limited; meanwhile, the combination of CMT and Oral Chinese Herbal Medicine (OCHM) represents exciting adjunctive therapies. In this study, we ascertained the therapeutic effect of OCHM in combination with CMT for dilated cardiomyopathy by using meta-analysis methods for controlled clinical trials. We searched studi… Show more

“…Multiple meta-analyses and systematic reviews have confirmed the effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in treating DCM. A meta-analysis constituting 21 RCTs involving 1,566 patients revealed that oral Chinese herbal medicine effectively improves overall efficacy, LVEF, LVEDD, stroke volume (SV), BNP, and 6MWD in the treatment of DCM ( Zhu et al, 2016 ), which was consistent with our results. However, BNP, LVEF, SV, and 6MWD represented high heterogeneity in their meta-analysis.…”

“…In pursuit of finding novel therapy of CH and heart failure, various natural product based preparations are also empirically used due to the evidences of their efficacy, minimal side effects, affordability, and wide acceptability, especially for the people beyond the western hemisphere (Van Galen, 2014;Rastogi et al, 2016). A number of traditional Chinese medicines like QSYQ and Danshensu (Salvia miltiorrhiza) have shown cardio-protective effect in many experimental sets up (Zhu et al, 2016;Hao et al, 2017;Layne and Ferro, 2017).…”

“…12 The diagnostic values circulating miRNAs in plasma for DVT have been explored previously, and they are confirmed of correlation with the markers of hypercoagulability. 13 MicroRNA-335-5p (miR-335-5p) is reported to be transcribed in the genomic region of chromosome 7q32.2, 14 and it is closely associated with inflammatory responses, cell proliferation and migration. 15 Simultaneously, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is a key member of the serine protease inhibitor family, and is involved in the fibrinolytic system and plasmin generation.…”
