Oral Cholecysto-Cholangiography with Iopodate and Metoclopramide

Abstract

SUMMARY A simple method of oral cholecysto‐cholangiography is described, the features of which are: Fractionated administration of 4.5 gms of Sodium Iopodate at 12 hours and 6 gms of Calcium Iopodate 1 hour prior to examination. Pharmacologic assistance (10 mg Metoclopramide orally taken at the same time as Solu‐Biloptin) to promote gastric emptying and facilitate intestinal absorption of contrast. Liberal use of tomography. In a series of 50 consecutive cases without pre‐selection, demonstration of duct system by hepatic excretion is achieved in 76%. This included 9 out of 11 cases (82%) of opacified gall bladder with stones which furnished definitive information on the biliary system with a single examination. Of more importance is the visualization of ducts in all 6 cases (100%) of non opacified gall bladders, converting an otherwise “failed” examination into a useful diagnostic study. This has obviated the use of repeat dose of oral contrast or intravenous cholangiography which would result in additional cost and inconvenience to the patient and department. This technique is a simple, safe and complete study of the biliary tract and can be recommended as a routine examination.
