the OCP may affect the efficacy of the OCP and could result in an unintended pregnancy.A record was kept of all adult female patients of childbearing age (16-55 years) who were prescribed antibiotics during their inpatient stay and just before each patient was discharged from the ward, one of the authors (JSP) conducted a brief structured interview with the patient, asking whether they had been advised regarding risks accompanying the concurrent use of antibiotics and the OCP. If advice was given, the patient was further questioned for details of the advice and whether they were actually taking the OCP. The patient's medical notes were checked to see whether any advice given was documented.Following the first audit cycle, the induction programme for training grade doctors joining the ENT department was altered to include a brief presentation outlining the clinical and medicolegal importance of informing patients about the consequences of concurrent administration of antibiotics and the OCP. A re-audit was then undertaken for a further 6-month period.Although girls under the age of 16 years may be using the pill there are peculiar confidentiality issues. It was therefore decided that the audit should be restricted to those over the age of 16.
