Oral Linear Epidermal Nevus: A Review of the Literature and Report of Two New Cases

Abstract: Linear epidermal nevus (LEN) is a sporadic hamartomatous lesion of the skin due to the proliferation of clones of embryonic ectodermal cells, which are arranged according to a typical linear configuration known as Blaschko's lines. Oral involvement of LEN is very rare and few cases have been reported in the medical literature. We report two new cases of LEN with exclusive oral involvement, which presented with the typical unilateral or midline distribution. Oral LEN presents as an exophytic lesion with well de… Show more

“…Lastly, verrucous epidermal nevus (VEN), a congenital malformation or hamartoma derived from embryonic ectoderm, should be also considered. Oral involvement by VEN is a rare manifestation, described as unilateral or midline papules or nodules, with a papillary or verrucous surface, usually affecting the tongue, lips, gingiva, buccal mucosa and palate [18].…”

“…More rarely, ILVEN has been described on the trunk with typical curvilinear transverse bands, which follow the Blaschko lines, sometimes stopping at the midline [ 8 ]. Different localisations, like genital or mucosal, are extremely rare [ 9 - 11 ].…”

“…24,25 Oral LEN has been successfully treated with surgical excision quite often without recurrence. 4 Treatment of cutaneous LEN includes both topical and surgical modalities. Topical calcipotriol has reportedly shown partial regression and growth retardation of lesions.…”

“…LEN differs from a nevus that presents as a solitary mass and is considered its own distinct form of nevus. 1,4 The lines of Blaschko, although not fully understood, are believed to represent the pathway of migrating embryonic skin cells. LEN represents a form of mosaicism, whereby an individual has cells with different genotypes derived from the same zygote.…”
