Oral migration of Dirofilaria repens after creeping dermatitis

Abstract: We report an autochthonous case of oral dirofilariasis in a 46-year-old female patient exposed in South-Eastern France. The patient first presented eyelid creeping dermatitis of one-week duration, then a sub-mucosal nodule appeared in the cheek. The entire nodule was removed surgically. Histologically, the nodule appeared as inflammatory tissue in which a worm was seen. The molecular analysis, based on cox1 and 12S sequences, identified Dirofilaria repens. Ivermectin treatment was given prior to diagnosis, whi… Show more

“…Although in other case reports, patients infected with D. repens stated that prior to contact with the parasite they had traveled to areas such as Croatia, France, Italy, Russia or Sri Lanka, in our case report, the patient had not traveled in recent years and had not reported any trauma in the antecedents [ 5 , 15 , 17 , 47 , 48 ].…”

“…The consequence of this change is an increase in the number of vectors of parasites, mosquitoes, capable of surviving and developing in the new temperature conditions. The development of world tourism, international business trips and a large number of domesticated dogs and cats are also factors contributing to the increase in the number of cases of dirofilariasis among humans [ 17 , 18 ]. Experimental infections of mosquitoes carried out in Ukraine, relevant to Poland, revealed the development of D. repens to the L3 stage within 13–14 days at 18–28 °C after ingestion an infectious blood meal [ 19 ].…”

“…Our search showed six cases of human oral Dirofilaria repens from the European part of the world. Two of them were from France [ 9 , 23 ], and one each was from Italy [ 13 ], Russia [ 18 ], Serbia [ 22 ], and Bulgaria [ 24 ]. Most of the reported cases were from Sri Lanka (nine cases) [ 11 , 17 ] and the rest were from India (five cases) [ 1 , 10 , 12 , 15 , 16 ], Brazil (two cases) [ 19 , 20 ], the United States (one case) [ 21 ], and China (one case) [ 14 ], confirming tropical parts of Asia as endemic areas of Dirofilaria repens infestation.…”
