Oral prednisone in the treatment of acne agminata

Abstract: Acne agminata (lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei), once regarded as a tuberculide, is a facial granulomatous disease still seen in young adults in Japan, despite a decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis. Although most lesions regress within a few years, even without treatment, disfiguring scars remain on the face. We have evaluated the efficacy of low dose oral prednisone therapy because, in the past, there has been no satisfactory therapy for this condition. “…Various treatments are reported in the literature, but specific treatment guidelines are lacking. Retinoid, anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, and antimicrobial medications as well as laser therapy have been used for the treatment of LMDF, but no single agent is consistently effective 8, 12, 13. Tetracyclines are commonly used as a first-line treatment, but their efficacy in this disorder is often unsatisfactory.…”

“…Tetracyclines are commonly used as a first-line treatment, but their efficacy in this disorder is often unsatisfactory. Treatment with oral prednisolone has been found to prevent scarring when initiated early in the disease course 12 . Given the rarity of LMDF and its tendency to spontaneously resolve, the effect of different therapies on the disorder is difficult to evaluate.…”

“…En lo referente al tratamiento, todos los pacientes tuvieron una respuesta adecuada a la Prednisona, coincidiendo con lo reportado en la literatura, motivo adicional para dar a conocer que esta patología no tiene relación con tuberculosis, ni rosácea, puesto que los pacientes habrían empeorado [18,19].…”
