Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

Abstract: The incidence of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is on the rise. Association with tobacco and alcohol is well established. Transformation rates in premalignant lesions and conditions vary in the available literature. Oral cancer in other parts of the world has different etiology in contrast to Indian oral cancer. Because of this Indian OSCC may require different parameters for treatment than that of the other oral cancer. Its prognosis also may not be comparable to others.

“…Consequently, the success of OSCC treatment depends on an appropriate and quick intervention at the first stage of the tumor [ 18 ]. The conventional therapeutic approaches are based on surgery, radiotherapy, systemic chemotherapy, or combinations thereof [ 19 ]; however, these strategies are often aggressive, thus negatively affecting patients’ quality of life, while likewise being often unsatisfactory in terms of survival rate. Considering the high incidence of OSCC, it is still necessary to identify novel bioactive compounds as well as to design new drug delivery systems aimed at increasing the efficacy of conventional treatments, minimizing their adverse effects and thus allowing their drawbacks to be overcome.…”

“…Each year, approximately 263,000 new cases are detected worldwide. Tragically, the disease claims the lives of 127,000 individuals annually ( 1 , 2 ). OSCC accounts for more than 90% of oral cancer ( 3 , 4 ).…”

“…The usual treatment for patients with early stage OSCC is surgery that can totally remove the tumors. The main clinical management for patients with advanced stage OCSS is diverse medical therapies i.e., radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and combination therapy ( Nandini et al, 2020 ; Deshmukh et al, 2021 ). Although these medical therapies have been optimized over the last several decades, however, they are still far from ideal therapeutic efficacy ( Siegel et al, 2020 ; Surer et al, 2021 ) and the overall 5-year survival rate is less than 60% ( Yu et al, 2019 ).…”
