Oral vascular malformation in a patient with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: a case report

Abstract: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an inherited mucocutaneous disease characterized by recurrent epistaxis, lesions on skin and oral mucosa, and arteriovenous malformations of the soft tissues. This article describes the treatment of a 64-year-old woman with a bleeding nodule, which was diagnosed as an arteriovenous malformation of the gingival mucosa. She was treated using sclerotherapy. Patients with HHT can be treated in the dental office and vascular malformations of these patients can be succe… Show more

“…According to the literature review, despite the commonness of oral mucosal telangiectasias, only 2 cases with minor oral bleeds have been reported. 13 Pulmonary and cerebral AVMs have been observed in 13 to 15% and 9 to 10% of patients, respectively. 14 Gastrointestinal telangiectasias have been reported in 13 to 45% of patients.…”

“…Differential diagnosis is required between telangiectasias in the Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome and ataxia-telangiectasia syndrome, congenital benign telangiectasia and vascular lesions found in chronic hepatic disorders. Sequential photocoagulation using argon laser and sclerotherapy provide good effects in arresting bleedings from the oral mucosa [ 10 , 11 ]. Unsatisfactory aesthetic effect caused by telangiectasias in the facial skin may be effectively eliminated with a dye laser [ 12 ].…”

“…Those are the most prevalent among the five HHT types existent 5 . ENG and ALK-1 encode for receptor proteins expressed on vascular cells and involved in the TGF-β superfamily signalling (including TGFβ ligand proteins, receptor proteins, activins, BMPs, and cytoplasmic signalling molecules such as Smads 6 ).…”
