Orally administered recombinant Lactobacillus expressing African swine fever virus antigens that induced immunity responses

Abstract: African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious, acute, febrile disease caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), with morbidity and mortality rates approaching 100% in domestic and wild swine, resulting in massive economic losses to the pig industry worldwide. This study aimed to express the p30, p54, and p72 proteins encoded by ASFV in vitro using the Lactobacillus lactis (L. lactis) expression system. Here, six new functional recombinant L. lactis were constructed, and the expression of the p30 prote… Show more

“…In our laboratory, we expressed the p30, p54, and p72 proteins encoded by ASFV in vitro using the Lactobacillus lactis expression system. Findings suggested that recombinant Lactobacillus induced humoral, cellular, and local mucosal immunity via orally administered rabbits at a dose of 10 8 CFU/ml of combined immunization ( Zhang et al, 2023 ).…”

“…However, it is important to note that the ASF vaccine, though commercialized with products [46] like NAVET-ASFVAC and AVAC ASF LIVE, is not a flawless solution and has its limitations. Reliance on live attenuated strains may not provide sterilizing immunity [47], allowing vaccinated pigs to still become infected if exposed to wild ASF strains or other genotypes. Safety, although demonstrated under experimental conditions, poses potential adverse effects in the field.…”

“…The experimental pieces of evidence of this vaccine highlight reduced IAV shedding in pigs challenged 12 days post-vaccination [32]. Live attenuated vaccines (LAVs) are also used to control ASF and CSF [33]. Recent developments have sparked optimism regarding the potential for an effective and safe vaccine.…”
