Orange Emission of TbF3-Containing Fluoride Oxide Glass

Abstract: A new fluoride oxide glass containing TbF3 was prepared in the composition of xTbF3·20BaF2·10AlF3·(70-x)GeO2 (x=10-40). The temperature of melt was 1200 °C. The glass transition temperatures were 600–800 °C, depending on composition. Fluorescence spectra of the glasses were changed with Tb3+ concentration. The color of emission light changed from green to orange for x=10-30 and from orange to green for x=30-40.

“…In the presented studies, concerning mainly the ionic conductivity of oxyfluorides, a monoclinic crystal system of the P2/c space group is reported. [26][27][28][29][30][31] The assignment of a tetragonal structure to binary rare earth oxyfluorides results in a discrepancy in the positions of XRD reflections with the reference pattern. Also the shape of XRD peaks recorded, their intensity and the ratio between them are in disagreement with the theoretical pattern.…”

“…For example, the binary rare earth metal oxide fluoride such as Nd 2 Eu 2 O 3 F 6 has an ordered ionic configuration which causes a higher electric conductivity than that of YSZ-11 [31]. The oxide fluoride materials containing We have reported the synthesis and properties of the oxide fluoride glasses containing NdF 3 [32] and TbF 3 [33]. These glasses can contain a large amount of rare earth element ($60 mol% as LnF 3 ).…”

“…Oxide fluoride glasses, which can contain rare earth fluorides of more than 50 mol%, have been studied and investigated for their preparation and properties [23,24]. We have also reported the orange emission of Tb 3+ containing oxide fluoride glass [25]. In that report, the mechanism of the orange emission could not be proved.…”
