Orchestrating scalable service function chains in a NFV environment

Abstract: Service Function Chaining (SFC) serves the traffic of a specific service along an ordered set of Service Functions (SFs). SFC uses Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies to reach the deployment and removal of SFC in an appropriate time with minimal costs. However, during the life time of deployed SFCs, the SFs are exposed to the risk of overloading, which results in an end-to-end packets drop and high delay at the application level. This paper presents the conc… Show more

“…In recent years, researchers have studied many issues raised in NFV, including SFC routing, VNF placement, resource management, and orchestration. For example, in [9], Medhat et al address the VNF implementation and migration issue when an instance of service functions becomes overwhelmed by seeking an appropriate way to redirect traffic flows. In [10], Eramo et al, present three algorithms that tackle VNF instance and SFC routing in reaction to changes in the workload.…”

“…In [14], a use case of SFC applied to NFV and SDN technologies is reported. In particular, an SFC Orchestrator capable of dynamically updating the Service Function Paths at any time has been proposed.…”

“…For example, in [38], the authors summarized their experimental activity aimed at designing, building, and testing a fully functional virtualized mobile core network, pointing out lessons learned and recommendations for future improvements. In [39], the authors present the concept of a scalable service function chaining (SFC) Orchestrator capable of deploying SF Chains following the ETSI-NFV architectural model, as well as orchestrating the runtime phase by rerouting the traffic to a different path in case of overload of certain SF instances.…”
