Ordered Films by Alternating Polyelectrolyte Deposition of Cationic Side Chain and Anionic Main Chain Chromophoric Polymers

Abstract: Using the method of aqueous solution alternating polyelectrolyte deposition (APD), secondorder nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer films were prepared for the first time in which both polymers were NLO-active. Films were prepared by alternately coating a solid substrate with an NLO-active side chain polycation and an NLO-active main chain polyanion. This new polyanion was comprised of R-cinnamoyl chromophores in the syndioregic configuration (an "accordion" polymer). The new polycation was derived from polyepichlo… Show more

“…6,7,[9][10][11] As long as constituent polyelectrolytes contain sufficiently high charge density, they will likely form layered films. 7,9,[12][13][14][15] Recent materials used to construct layered polyelectrolytes films include conduct-ing polymers, 16 inorganic sheets, 12,[17][18][19] light-emitting polymers, 20,21 dyes, 22 and biomolecules. 11,15,23,24 Unfortunately, layered polyelectrolyte films are relatively permeable because their ionic composition allows them to absorb water.…”
