“…In lymph nodes of children with PAC, particles 40 to 50 nm in diameter, bounded by a membrane and containing an electron-opaque core, have been observed within the cytoplasm of some sinusoid-lining cells (Jean et al, 1968). These particles have a similar structure to those seen in organ cultures inoculated with serum from hepatitis patients with Au antigenaemia (Jenson et al, 1970), and to those seen in the endoplasmic reticulum of hepatocytes of Au antigen carriers (Stein, Fainaru, and Stein, 1972). These particles resemble the virus-like particles about 42 nm in diameter that have been found in Au antigen positive hepatitis patients by Dane, Cameron, and Briggs (1970).…”

“…Technical details are significant, for acetone fixation as employed by others (19)(20)(21) attenuates or destroys the reactivity of SH antigen. Our contention that SH antigen, and by inference the virus, is present in the cytoplasm is supported by the observation of SH virus-like particles in the mitochondria of lymphoid cells infected in vitro with this agent (32). The specificity of the cytoplasmic localization of SH antigen was established by neutralization studies with SH antigen-positive sera and purified SH antigen, as well as by competitive inhibition.…”

“…Cultured fragments of human inguinal lymph nodes obtained at the time of herniorrhaphy from 4 children were incubated immediately with serum containing hepatitis B antigen from a drug addict admitted to hospital with hepatitis (Jenson et al 1970). The pooled 4-and 6-day fluids harvested from one of four groups of the lymph node organ cultures produced a faint but definite precipitin line for hepatitis B antigen by the immunodiffusion technique and a titre of 1:20 was obtained by complement fixation.…”
