We have analyzed the effects of CO 2 activation on the porosity of ultrahigh pore volume carbon aerogels. Data obtained from the new 2D-NLDFT-HS model for carbons has been compared to the results of conventional methods (BJH, t-plot, DR); all the models were applied to the desorption branch of the isotherms. Physical activation of the carbon aerogel at different burn-off degrees resulted in materials showing increasing volume of micropores and alteration of mesopore structure. The later effect manifested itself by a characteristic inflection in the desorption branch of the nitrogen isotherm at high relative pressures. Such curvatures are attributed to a non uniform activation of the carbon matrix with CO 2 that in some parts carves the surface of the precursor deeper than in others, creating bimodal/multimodal pore size distributions. The different methods applied for the assessment of the textural properties of the aerogels with ultrahigh micro-/mesoporosity showed excellent agreement in terms of pore volumes, surface areas and average pore size.

Highly porous carbon aerogels with carbon structures additives may be attractive materials for energy storage devices. Traditional resorcinol-formaldehyde-based carbon aerogels modified with graphene, graphene oxide and CNT were compared with respect to their morphology and capacitive properties as electric double layer capacitors. Materials were prepared using drying in supercritical acetone instead of commonly used carbon dioxide. Acetone was not only used for solvent exchange but was also expelled medium at supercritical conditions. This allowed to limit materials shrinkage and enhance specific capacity that in case of CNT-modified carbon aerogel was as high as 326 F/g i.e. more than 4 times bigger than for parent carbon aerogel. The specific surface area increased from 123 to 629 m 2 /g. Enhancement of the specific capacity was also found for gels modified with graphene and graphene oxide. The reason of such a behavior was a difference in structure and pore size distribution of additives.

Abstract: TiO2-carbon nanocomposites were synthesized by simply mixing a TiO2 sol with a semi-cured resorcinol and formaldehyde gel, followed by drying and pyrolysis at 1000 o C in an inert atmosphere. ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPTFor comparison, the pure resorcinol and formaldehyde gel and the pure TiO2 gol were also prepared, dried and pyrolysed in same conditions, respectively. The composites with a low TiO2 content had the similar pore size distribution (PSD) and crystallographic structure to that of the blank sample (i.e., micropore size distribution), However the presence of high content TiO2 in the composites effectively resulted in an increase in mesoporosity and a crystallographic structure of dominant rutile TiO2 in the TiO2-carbon nanocomposite.
