Organic and Inorganic Geochemical and Mineralogical Assessments of the Silurian Akkas Formation, Western Iraq

Abstract: The Silurian Akkas Formation has been reported and described only in the subsurface of western Iraq. The formation is divided into the lower Hoseiba Member, which contains two high‐TOC “hot” shale intervals that together are around 60 m thick, and the overlying Qaim Member that is composed of lower‐TOC “cold” shales. This study investigates the source rock potential of Akkas Formation shales from the Akkas‐1and Akkas‐3 wells in western Iraq and assesses the relationship between their mineral and elemental cont… Show more

“…The lower Paleozoic successions have two potential source rocks; the first is the lower Silurian hot shale of Akkas Formation, and the second is shale of the Khabour Formation [ 14 , 27 , 73 ]. The two candidate source rocks are black shales of the lower Silurian hot shales contain mainly marine organic matter (type II kerogen) and were deposited under reducing conditions.…”

“…In an effort to constraining the tectonic setting of silisiclastic rocks, relevant discrimination diagrams based on major elements have been employed by several researchers (e.g. Armstrong-Altrin, 2015; Tawfik et al 2015;Al-Juboury et al, 2021) based on the differences in SiO 2 values, and the discrimination diagrams are subdivided into a low silica type (35-63%) and a high-silica type (63-95%) and accordingly, three different tectonic setting can be identified as island arc, rift and collisional settings. The SiO 2 value of shales of the present study vary from 41.90 to 75.87wt%, therefore the samples can be classified as low-silica clastic sediments and high-silica clastic sediments (Table 3).…”

“…Correlation AnalysisCorrelation analysis between the major elements and available trace elements show that SiO 2 correlated negatively with Al 2 O 3 (r = -0.061) in the shales. The presence of SiO 2 is related to the occurrence of plagioclase, quartz, and clay minerals, whereas the Al 2 O 3 content may be correlated with the preferred incorporation of aluminous clays into shale(Al-Juboury et al 2021). The negative correlation between SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 may suggest that SiO 2 occur as either detrital silicates or is not influenced by clay minerals(Wang et al 2017).…”
