Organic and Inorganic Geochemical Characterization of Mangrove Sediments of the São Francisco Estuary, Sergipe

Abstract: Mangrove ecosystems develop in coastal areas and possess intrinsic characteristics being considered in Brazil environmental preservation areas, however, anthropogenic impacts associated with property speculation and petroleum activities are altering the landscape of these ecosystems. This study aimed to perform organic and inorganic geochemical characterization (pH, organic matter content (MO), elemental analysis, determination of metals -Al, Na, K, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb) in mangrove sediments of the São F… Show more

“…Similar to the present study, high OM percentages were detected by Santos et al (2015), with 24.61% of OM in the surface sediments collected from a mangrove area of the São Francisco River estuarine region. They also classified the sediments as typically organic.…”

“…The mangrove is an environment rich in organic carbon, offering protection against coastal erosion. It also has a social and economic importance since fishing is considered the main source of income for the riverside population [7][8][9]. The mangrove which is the object of this study is located in the municipality of Rio Formoso, located in the physiographic region of the Southern Meridional of the state of Pernambuco, 92km from the capital Recife.…”
