Organic impurity profiling of methylone and intermediate compounds synthesized from catechol

Abstract: This work examined the synthesis and organic impurity profile of methylone prepared from catechol. The primary aim of this work was to determine whether the synthetic pathway used to prepare 3,4-methylenedioxypropiophenone could be ascertained through analysis of the synthesized methylone. The secondary aim was the structural elucidation and origin determination of the organic impurities detected in methylone and the intermediate compounds. The organic impurities present in the reaction products were identifie… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the organic impurities contained in the synthesized methylon using standard techniques could not be used to classify the catechol or the intermediate 1,3-benzodioxole.. This shows that organic impurity pro iling for methylone has limitations in evaluating the natural and synthetic pathways used for precursor determination (Heather et al, 2017).…”

“…The authors detected six organic impurities in the 1,3‐benzodioxole intermediate, six organic impurities in 3,4‐methylenedioxypropiophenone and five organic impurities in methylone, respectively. Several identified impurities were subsequently verified by organic synthesis …”
