Reforestation on abandoned agricultural lands is widespread in the belt of boreal forests. We analyzed the morphological and physicochemical properties of a Plaggic Glossic Retisol (Siltic, Cutanic) site that had been abandoned either 7, 19, or 85 years ago, as well as a Glossic Stagnic Retisol (Siltic, Cutanic) as a control. Involvement of forest soils in agricultural use results in the degradation of organic horizons, which are not restored until many decades after the termination of active agricultural use. Arable soil horizons were preserved and were clearly identified 85 years after the land had been abandoned. The morphological features of the eluvial and subeluvial horizons were determined at all sites. Soils at sites that had been abandoned for 7 and 19 years showed lower acidity and higher base saturation compared to the background soil. Total carbon stocks were lower at the abandoned sites. The slow increase of carbon stocks after the soil had been abandoned is caused by C increase as in the organic as in the topsoil mineral horizons. Soils that had been abandoned for 7 and 19 years contained less water‐extractable forms of C and N than the control and 85‐year forest soils. Agricultural use leads to a reduction in C stocks of forest soils. The postagrogenic soil C sequestration rate was estimated to be 30–40 g·m−2·yr−1.

The effect of the combined use of humic preparations and pesticides in various dosages on the quantitative composition of carbohydrates in agronomically valuable soil aggregates was studied. Biologically active humic substances indirectly, through plants and microorganisms, intensify the release of sugars, which play an essential role in the initial stages of the soil aggregates formation. Pesticides have a depressing effect on the soil microflora development, which, in turn, is one of the factors of the agronomically valuable soil structure formation. The introduction of humic preparations reduces the toxic effect of pesticides and reduces seasonal deterioration in the structural state of the soil. It has been shown that the distribution of aggregates according to variants, both in the case of dry sieving and in the case of wet sieving, correlates with the dynamics of the carbohydrate content in soil particles. This tendency is especially perceptible in the variants where pesticides were introduced into the soil together with the humic preparation. The correlation between the distribution of soil aggregates and carbohydrates according to Chaddock’s scale is salient (r = 0.532). The introduction of humic preparations makes it possible to reduce the loss of the agronomically valuable structure even in aftereffect.

In abandoned south-taiga hayfields overgrowing with forest species, the biomass of the grass layer decreases even before the formation of a closed tree stand. Actual acidity increases in the upper part of the soil profile, which is adequately reflected in the species composition of the living ground cover. This trend is manifested more clearly in light soils. In soils of a hayfield meadow affected for many years by grazing prior to mowing, the content and reserves of organic carbon are significantly higher in comparison with hayfields not affected by grazing. After the termination of haymaking activities, the content and reserves of organic carbon in the upper part of the soil profile go down. Overall, long-term grazing slows down the postagrogenic dynamics of organic matter in soils of dry meadows.
