Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are broad environmental contaminants, which, due to their lipophilic profile, tend to be absorbed on particles and finally accumulate in marine environments. Due to their cumulative power of adsorption, bivalves are major bioindicators of PAH pollution. Substantial research has been performed on the effects of PAH pollution on marine bivalves. Here we review PAH analysis using bivalves and effects of PAH on bivalves. Specific focus is given on: (1) PAH analytical methodologies and their performance, (2) levels of marine PAH as measured through bivalves within the last decade; current pollution status and (3) health effects of PAH on bivalves.

This study aims to evaluate levels and effects of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cockles (Acanthocardia tuberculatae) collected from two differently influenced areas in the Mediterranean Western Moroccan coasts. PAHs accumulation was studied in soft tissues using Soxhlet extraction and separation on silica column methods. The measure of those organic compounds was realized by Gas chromatography coupled to Mass spectrometer technics (GC/MS). The impact evaluation was carried out by the study of biochemical responses in gills and digestive gland using two enzymes activities: Glutathione S-Transferase (GST) and Acetylcholinesterase (AchE). The PAHs displayed significant rates of accumulation ranging from 10.12µg/g Dried Weight (DW) to 11.65µg/g (DW) respectively in Oued Laou and Martil sites. Pyrolytic and petrogenic origins were observed in both sites. Pyrolytic origin of PAHs was strongly detected in Oued Laou site while petrogenic origin was mostly detected in Martil site. Biochemical study revealed significant enzymatic response of GST and AchE in gills and digestive gland. The study showed significant biochemical response more important in Martil site than Oued Laou site traduced by GST induction and AchE inhibition. Those results seemed to be related to accumulation rates of PAHs, which was also suggested by the statistical analysis PCA.

Spatial distribution and ecological risk analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Cilincing waters – Jakarta Bay. Within a few decades, Polycylic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution increases in marine environment in seawater, sediment, and organism. Generally, this pollutant comes from industrial and household waste, agricultural runoff, shipping activities, and input from atmospheric deposition. This study aims to determine the concentration, spasial distribution, source, and ecological risks analysis in Cilincing waters, Jakarta Bay. Samples of seawater, total suspended solid (TSS), and sediment were collected on April 2019 at ten stations. Samples were stored at 4oC afterward analyzed in the laboratory. All samples were then extracted with dichloromethane and n-hexane solvents. They were then fractionated with n-pentane: dichloromethane, and the results were injected into a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) instrument. The highest concentration of PAH compounds in seawater, TSS, and sediment samples are 208.74 ng.L1-; 5.90 ng.L1-; and 63.63 ng.g1- dry weight (dw) respectively. The highest spatial distribution of PAHs in seawater and TSS samples were detected in station 1, 9, and 10, whilst in sediment sample was in station 5 and 6. The ratio of ∑Low Molecular Weight (LMW)/∑High Molecular Weight (HMW), Fluo/(Fluo + Pyr), and An/(An + Phe) revealed that the source of PAH pollution dominated from pyrogenic, especially petroleum combustion from vehicle engine. The total concentration of ∑PAH-9 in sediment was 31.21 ng.g1-dw which was lower than Effects Range Low (ERL), Effects Range Median (ERM), Threshold Effect Levels (TEL), and Probably Effect Levels (PEL) values referred to sediment quality guideline. These results were indicated low potential of causing an adverse biological effect.
