Organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy of the Well Höflein 6 in the Cretaceous–Paleogene Rhenodanubian Flysch Zone (Vienna Basin, Austria)

Abstract: Palynological analysis of the Rhenodanubian Flysch Zone section recovered from Well Höflein 6 north of Vienna allows the successful application of non-calcareous dinoflagellate biostratigraphy to the deep-water sediments of the Greifenstein Nappe. All 62 cuttings samples contained organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) and some of them allow age-assessment. The results corroborated the presence of two thrust slices. The upper thrust unit A comprises a Campanian to Lower Eocene succession including, fr… Show more

“…Bujak et al 1980;Williams et al 2004). The present specimens either prove that (i) G. semitecta first appeared in the Campanian (see also Mohamed and Wagreich 2013), or (ii) constitute a separate, although similar species. The latter option seems to be more reasonable in the presented estimation.…”

“…Many of these studies describe diverse and abundant dinocyst assemblages, characteristic of the uppermost Maastrichtian and lowermost Danian (Wilson,1974;J.M. Hansen, 1979;De Coninck and Smit,1982;Firth,1987Firth, , 1993Hultberg and Malmgren, 1987;Habib et al,1992;Moshkovitz and Habib, 1993;Schiøler and Wilson, 1993;Olsson et al, 1997;Schiøler et al,1997;Nøhr-Hansen and Dam,1997;Mohamed and Wagreich, 2013;Vellekoop et al, 2016). Others, often the thinner successions, are usually not very productive and yield poor or barren dinocyst assemblages (Gedl, 2004;Beiranvand et al, 2014;Machalski et al, 2016).…”
