This study assesses the role of formalized business in the innovation activities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the private sector in Vietnam. Panel data regression analysis is employed in this study. Research data were extracted from three surveys of small and medium private enterprises conducted by the United Nations University (UNU) in 2011, 2013 and 2015. The dataset contains information about enterprises in all major manufacturing sectors, on innovation activity, firm formalization status, and enterprises’ characteristics. Research results show that improving the status of the firm from informal to formal has a significant boost to the overall innovation performance, as well as each type of innovation of small and medium enterprises in Vietnam. This is the first study in Vietnam that examines the impact of formalization on product innovation outcomes of small and medium-sized private enterprises, taking into account the characteristics of enterprises such as size, age, technology level, and other specific features.

How Can the Professional Community Influence Teachers’ Work Engagement? The Mediating Role of Teacher Self-Efficacy

The sustainable development of education requires the continuous engagement of teachers, and the professional community has long been considered an important facilitator of teacher engagement. However, teachers’ professional community has often been analyzed as a unified construct, and thus the question of how teacher engagement is enhanced remains unanswered. Based on the conservation of resources theory, in this study, we investigated how teacher work engagement was affected by the crossover of job resources between the professional community (including shared norms, collective responsibility, collaboration, and reflective dialogue) and teachers (self-efficacy). The sample included 1123 primary and secondary school teachers in China. Covariance structural modeling was used to test our hypotheses. Shared norms and collective responsibility played a fundamental role and positively predicted collaboration, which in turn enhanced reflective dialogue. Teacher self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of the four dimensions of the professional community on teachers’ work engagement. The findings of this study indicate that the professional community offers valuable organizational and social resources that can be used by teachers to enhance their personal resources, such as self-efficacy, and thus become more engaged in their work. Shared norms and collective responsibility serve to shape a growth-oriented school culture that stimulates teachers’ willingness to collaborate and improves their confidence in teaching, and thus should be stressed by school leaders when introducing changes.

Research related to intellectual capital (IC) concerns its use and impact on the selected results achieved by enterprises. IC is analysed as a single stream of enterprises’ internal resources. Since IC is used in the business activities of enterprises, it must also be acquired. However, research conducted so far does not cover the area of IC acquisition. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of research undertaken in a relatively new area of IC acquisition that has not been scientifically explored over a research period of several years. The research covered innovative small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that were developing software in Poland from 2005 to 2019. The data series allowed the use of dedicated analysis tools, including the dynamic changes over time, multidimensional comparison and cluster analysis. The primary conclusions revealed that the acquisition of IC is a process that takes place simultaneously and continuously in two independent streams—internal and external—and that the external sources of IC were more important for SMEs covered by the research. Continued research will allow comparative analyses between various branches or sectors of the economy to bring new knowledge about the importance of IC to the business activities of enterprises.
