Organizational Routines: Conventions as a Source of Change and Stability

Abstract: Recent research shows that organizational routines are not as rigid as previously assumed, but instead are subject to significant endogenous change in the very process of their performance. We contribute to the discussion on organizational routines by describing the conventionalist perspective and elaborating how this perspective can provide more nuanced insights into why the performance of organizational routines changes or remains stable. Drawing on the theory of Economy of Conventions, we argue that focusin… Show more

“…These studies remain less helpful for organizations, particularly for MNC subsidiaries operating or ready to operate in the context of Pakistan, and less informative for international HRM scholars. Whereas, studies which inductively explore the underlying mechanisms behind different HRM routines (Kozica, Kaiser, & Friesl, 2014), taking into consideration the role of local cultural norms, institutional environments (Powell & DiMaggio, 2012), and conventions based handling of situations (Eymard-Duvernay, Favereau, Orléan, Salais, & Thévenot, 2005;Thévenot, 2001) are of greater interest to international audience.…”

“…We use the study results to point out the importance of developing a collective understanding for organisational actors working through paradox. In order to theorise this phenomenon, we use insights from French convention theory (Thévenot, 1984;Boltanski & Thévenot, 2006), a perspective that is receiving increasing attention in the field of human resource management (HRM) (Brandl & Pernkopf, 2015), and organizational studies (Jagd, 2011;Kozica, Kaiser, & Friesl, 2014). The French convention school proposes that organisational actors handle uncertainty in coordination by establishing conventions that impart information on how rules and/or regulations shall be interpreted.…”
