Organochlorine Pesticides in Soils Around Watersheds of Beijing Reservoirs: A Case Study in Guanting and Miyun Reservoirs

Abstract: A systematic survey of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) residues in soils around reservoirs that supply water to Beijing, China, has been lacking. 104 representative surface soil samples were collected around Guanting Reservoir (GTR) and Miyun Reservoir (MYR) in Beijing watershed to characterize concentrations and sources of organochlorine pesticides, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). Compared with other studies of OCPs in soils and with the Chinese environmental quality st… Show more

“…By comparing with previously reported results [16, 18, 19], it can be seen that DDTs have always been the main components of pesticidal POPs in the Guanting Reservoir area, that is, 93.2% in 2003, 90.2% in 2007, and 90.6% in 2009, respectively. Figure 2 shows that the concentration of pp′-DDE in soil is the greatest in 2009.…”

“…Many endophytic bacteria have been isolated from various vegetations like medicinal plants (Passari et al, 2015 ), grasses (Kelemu et al, 2011 ), plant debris (Hu et al, 2009 ), and rice (Mano and Morisaki, 2008 ) were screened for the production of bioactive compounds (Strobel and Long, 1998 ). Perennial grasses are the most abundant renewable energy source in India.…”

“…It was once Beijing's second largest water source for drinking, agricultural and industrial purposes. Since the 1970s, Guanting Reservoir has been heavily polluted owing to rapid industrialization and intensive application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to arable fields in upstream regions (T. , Hu et al 2009 (Xue et al 2005(Xue et al , 2006. Along the shoreline of the reservoir, 4 species of healthy plants, Phragmites communis, Potamogeton crispus, Nymphaea tetragona and Najas marina, which are dominant aquatic plants in this region, were sampled from Daying (40°44' 30'' N, 115°90'71'' E), GuiS lake (40°45' 16'' N, 115°96' 08'' E) and KZ bridge (40°45' 00'' N, 115°88' 02'' E) where one of the rivers flows into the reservoir.…”
