Organometallic Polymers of the Transition Metals

Abstract: This article provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis, properties and applications of organometallic polymers of the transition metals. The different classes of organometallic polymers are described according to their structural make‐up, as well as by their methods of synthesis. A number of examples of each class are given to emphasize the richness and diversity in these areas of research. In addition to linear polymers, hyperbranched, crosslinked, star and dendritic polymers are also described. The pr… Show more

“…The incorporation of transition metal moieties into polymer backbones or side chains is known to produce magnetic, electric, liquid crystalline, and/or catalytic properties 1–14. Coordination of dicobalt hexacarbonyl (Co 2 (CO) 6 ) facilitates numerous cyclization reactions including the Pauson‐Khand and Nicolas reactions and provides an excellent route for the protection of alkynes 15–18.…”

“…The incorporation of transition metals into polymers can produce materials with interesting and potentially useful properties. Polymers with transition metal moieties in the backbone or side chains are known to possess magnetic, electric, liquid crystalline, and/or catalytic properties 1–7. Herein, we describe the synthesis and polymerization of norbornene monomers that contain two different transition metal moieties, including alkyne‐bis(tricarbonylcobalt) as well as organoiron complexes.…”

“…In the past decade, much work in side‐chain cationic cylopentadienyliron arene (CIA) complex‐containing polymers prepared using ROMP has been carried out by Abd‐El‐Aziz and co‐workers 1. 80, 81 Strictly, these iron complexes are not metallocenes.…”

“…Over the past sixty years, metallopolymers have been developed to combine the synthetic efficiency and versatility of an organic polymer framework with the unique redox, responsive, and catalytic properties of inorganic metals 118. Among a variety of metallopolymers, metallocene‐containing polymers attract significant attention in materials science due to their high thermal stability, fully reversible redox chemistry and many other fascinating properties that arise from their unique sandwich‐like structures 19–25.…”
