Organotin compounds in the marine environment of the Bay of Piran, Northern Adriatic Sea

Abstract: In the year 2000, organotin pollution was investigated in the Bay of Piran, Slovenia, at the northern extremity of the Adriatic Sea. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with single ion monitoring GC/MS-SIM was applied for speciation analysis of pentylated organotin compounds in water and mussels. Sampling of marine waters was performed in summer and autumn at 8 locations. Mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis were collected only in summer at 3 locations. The highest concentrations of tributyltin (TBT) in marine w… Show more

“…DPhT were below 0.005 μg g −1 Sn in all sampling sites, while MPhT concentrations in mussels were also very low and ranged from below 0.01 to 0.07 μg g −1 Sn. Similar low concentrations of phenyltin compounds were previously observed in Marina Portorož (Milivojevič Nemanič et al, 2002) and in Lagoon of Venice (Gallina et al, 2000). Data of the present investigation clearly demonstrated the significantly higher TBT concentrations in mussels in the winter time.…”

“…During the transport samples were kept in dark and cool containers. In the laboratory mussels were rinsed with fresh water and methanol (Milivojevič et al, 2002) to prevent extraneous contamination. Shells were Fig.…”

“…Trisubstituted OTC, including TBT and TPhT, are among the most hazardous pollutants to enter aquatic ecosystems (Hoch 2001 EC 2000). Although OTC were intensively investigated in the marine environment (Coelho et al 2002;Díez et al 2005;Godoi et al 2003;Gomez-Ariza et al 2001;Harino et al 1999;Milivojevič Nemanič et al 2002Ščančar et al 2007), they are a rare subject of research in river sediments (Bancon-Montigny et al 2004;ICPDR 2002;Lacorte et al 2006;Scrimshaw et al 2005).…”
