Abstract. Dust deposition in southern Belgium is estimated from the geochemical signature of an ombrotrophic peatland. The rare earth elements (REE) and lithogenic elements concentrations, as well as Nd isotopes, were determined by HR-ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS, respectively, along an ∼ 6 m peat section covering 5300 yr, from 2000 to 7300 cal BP, dated by the 14 C method. Changes in REE concentration in the peat correlate with those of Ti, Al, Sc and Zr that are lithogenic conservative elements, suggesting that REE are immobile in the studied peat bogs and can be used as tracers of dust deposition. Peat humification and testate amoebae were used to evaluate hydroclimatic conditions. The range of dust deposition varied from 0.03 to 4.0 g m −2 yr −1 . The highest dust fluxes were observed from 2750 to 2550 cal BP and from 5150 to 4750 cal BP, and correspond to cold periods. The εNd values show a large variability from −13 to −5, identifying three major sources of dusts: local soils, distal volcanic and desert particles.

Rare earth element (REE) concentrations were determined in 32 rainfall events collected in suburban Tokyo. Two or more samples were collected for 13 events out of 32 events. A pre-concentration method was applied using a chelate resin solid phase extraction column. Good and uniform recoveries for REEs (Y to Lu, 99~101% at pH = 3.7~4.0) were obtained. Detection limits reached as low as 0.001 ng L -1 (for Tb) with a 30 fold pre-concentration using a conventional Q-pole ICP-MS. Clear La and Gd excesses (definition is in the text) were evident in many cases. Y, Eu, Lu and Yb excesses may also exist in some events. In some events where multiple samplings were performed, crust normalized REE patterns changed during the rainfall events. These are the first evidences of clear REE pattern variations during the same rainfall events. The initial and final stage of some rainfall events may have different origins for the REEs. The correlations among the REEs with respect to logarithmic concentrations indicate that most of the REEs are of natural origin while La and Gd may have common anthropogenic components. We propose that materials for high refractive index and low dispersion optical glass production processes could be potential sources of La and Gd excesses because 1) La and Gd excesses are correlated, 2) other sources such as a cracking catalyst for petroleum refining or a contrast agent of magnetic resonance imaging cannot explain the excesses.

The source and proportion of REY, Th, and U exported by groundwater and by the ephemeral stream along with the elemental proportions passing through vegetation have been assessed in the subhumid tropical forested CZO of Mule Hole, Southern India. The study relies on a pluriannual hydrogeochemical monitoring combined with a hydrological model. The significant difference between the soil input (SI) and output (SO) solute fluxes (mmol/km2/yr) of LREE (SI‐SO = 13,250‐1,500), HREE (1,930‐235), Th (64‐12), and U (63‐25) indicates a strong uptake by roots carried by canopy and forest floor processes. The contribution of atmospheric dust leaching can reach about 60% of LREE and 80% of HREE. At the watershed scale, the U solute flux exported by groundwater (180 mmol/km2/yr) mainly originates from the breakdown of primary U‐bearing accessory minerals and dominates by a factor of 25 the stream flux. The precipitation of authigenic U‐bearing phases and adsorption onto Fe‐oxides and oxyhydroxides play a significant role for limiting the U mobility. In the groundwater, the plagioclase chemical weathering is efficiently traced by the positive Eu‐anomaly. The very low (REY) to nil (Th) contents are explained by the precipitation of authigenic phases. In the stream flow, dominated by the overland flow (87% of the yearly stream flow), the solute exports (in mmol/km2/yr) of REY (1,080 for LREE and 160 for HREE) and of Th (14) dominate those by groundwater. Their mobility is enhanced by chelation with organic ligands produced by forest floor and canopy processes.
