Origin of problems encountered in rice bran oil processing

Abstract: Origin of problems encountered in rice bran oil processingRice bran oil, not being a seed-derived oil, has a composition qualitatively different from common vegetable oils and the conventional vegetable oil processing technologies are not adaptable without incurring huge losses. The oil's unusual high content of waxes, free fatty acids, unsaponifiable constituents, phospholipids, glycolipids and its dark color, all cause difficulties in the refining process. An attempt was made in this investigation to look in… Show more

“…It is recommended that glycolipids be kept to as low a content as possible in crude RBO. One approach is enzymatic pretreatment with Lipase G, which has a hydrolysis function similar to that of a phospholipase (26). This enzyme hydrolyzes glycerides, phospholipids, and glycolipids and reduces the phosphorus level to about 5 ppm (26).…”

“…Crude rice bran wax obtained from rice processing is brownish and is separated from the dewaxing step of bran oil refining process. It is commonly removed by dewaxing or winterization of crude rice bran oil and is considered as waste (Kaimal et al., 2002). The composition of rice bran wax is not well known.…”

“…The presence of PGL has been reported to be the root causing problem in processing RBO (Kaimal et al, 2002) and to ensure its complete elimination it may be desirable to use nonporous membranes for degumming which may offer other benefits including partial dewaxing and decolorizing of crude oils (Manjula & Subramanian, 2009).…”
