Original article. Protective effect of resveratrol against neuronal damage through oxidative stress in cerebral hemisphere of aluminum and fluoride treated rats

Abstract: Aluminum has no defined biological function and it is potentially involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. Furthermore, the presence of fluoride causes more aluminum to accumulate in the brain, resulting in increased neuronal damage. In recent years, resveratrol through its ameliorative effects was found to be a neuroprotectant. This study reports the protective effects of resveratrol on combined aluminum and fluoride induced neuronal damage through oxidative stress in rats. Protective effe… Show more

“…Resveratrol, a phytochemical polyphenolic compound naturally occurring in many species of plants, prevents oxidative nerve damage, as demonstrated in studies conducted on rats [119]. In the brains of rats poisoned with AlCl 3 and NaF, and receiving resveratrol, in improvement in neuron structure was observed, as well as a reduction of the vacuolar spaces surrounding nerve cells and neurofibrillary tangles when compared to rats not receiving resveratrol.…”

“…These investigations led us to look into the protective effects of resveratrol against aluminum-and fluoride-induced neurodegeneration in rats. Recent past, we have published protective effects of resveratrol against aluminum-and fluoride-induced oxidative stress [14], and there are no reports on protective effects of resveratrol against aluminum along with fluorideinduced neurobehavioral disorders. Thus, the purpose of the present investigation was to examine the protective efficacy of resveratrol on learning ability, behavioral activities, and grip strength following Al and F exposure.…”

“…As a potent inhibitor of NF-κB, RES has various pharmacological effects such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, cardiovascular protection, anti-diabetic, restoration of immune system function (Lai et al, 2017), anti-apoptosis (Huang et al, 2014), anti-nociception (Pan, Chen, Wang, et al, 2016), anti-depression (Finnell et al, 2016), anticancer activities (Kumar et al, 2015), neuronal protection (Nalagoni & Karnati, 2016), and regulation of metabolism (Luo et al, 2017). It is non-toxic, inexpensive and has multiple pharmacological effects on SCI (Zhao et al, 2017).…”
